Cryptocurrencies and the activities around them have been calling the attention of several investors and individuals all over the world. One of the activities that received an important support were cryptocurrency mining activities. The Chelan Public Utility District (PUD) commissioners discovered unauthorized mining activities and has decided to act in order to halt all the activities that have no official authorization.
United States Unauthorized Mining Activities
According to a statement released by the PUD, and written by Kimberlee Craig on April the 2nd, the office explains that they will take all the necessary steps in order to enforce the moratorium on unauthorized cryptocurrency operations.
Local authorities seem very worried about this situation and will not allow such activities to take place without the necessary authorizations.
“Not only are we concerned, we’re incensed that individuals are putting people at risk,” explained Commissioner Steve McKenna. “We’re not going to tolerate it. This is a strong message, and I want to make that very clear.”
Unauthorized cryptocurrency mining activities have been discovered at the Wenatchee apartment. The report presented by the PUD explains that the activities could create fire risks for neighbors and damage grid equipment not seized for the load. Immediately after, PUD crews disconnected the power in order to stop the unauthorized activities.
Board President Denniis Bolz said:
“What we’re discussing is a person who is purposely trying to slip around the end and use power in a way that a facility was not designed for and doing so in a manner where there’s been no request for service to meet that kind of demand. I see yet, once again, a reason to support the installation of automated meters to be able to confront these scoundrels before they do burn an apartment building down and perhaps kill a family or children in the process.”
Increasing Costs for the Local Administration
Fighting local illegal mining activities is not an easy task. It requires investments and important amounts of money. John Stoll, Customer utilities managing director, commented that these situations show that there is an increased need for additional fees to cover the district’s costs.
Investigating and monitoring is a task that is performed by a local crew that is paid with taxes. At the same time, it is important to understand that these activities caused an important damage to the grid equipment, that it is not designed for high density loads.
In the past, unauthorized mining operations were detected. The individual performing this actions was warned and informed about the law. As he did not stop, PUD crews had to disconnect the service.
