The so called Partido Popular (PP), one of the most important political parties in Spain, has proposed a bill to include blockchain technology in the public administration. The main purpose is to improve transparency, efficiency, and public processes.
Blockchain Technology to Improve Efficiency and Transparency
Spain is currently one of the most active countries in Europe regarding Blockchain technology. This time, the PP decided to propose a bill to the parliament to start to embrace distributed ledger technology (DLT) in the public administration.
The proposal has been presented on June the 22nd and will have to be evaluated by the deputies and by the Economic and Enterprise Commission.
Spain has been working with blockchain technology and similar topics since a very long time. For example, the former Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, had some plans to reduce taxes and allow companies related to DLT to choose the country as headquarter.
But this is not the first time that Spain is involved in the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Back in march, for example, the political party Ciudadanos (Citizens) offered to create clear rules for enterprises related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
The main intention is to create a good legal framework in order for the space to grow and expand, but taking care of investors. Some countries have been working so as to create safer environments for investors without damaging companies. For example, Japan, after suffering several hacks, decided to impose greater controls on exchanges.
Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering Policies (AML) are just some of the improvements that governments are asking for. About it, the POSE party, presented a project to study regulations and policies that have been applied in other countries and take some ideas and implement them in Spain.
Some weeks ago, Barcelona opened a blockchain centre for those companies interested in DLT and similar technologies. Clearly, Spain is taken the lead in Europe and is trying to be one of the main destinations for crypto-related companies and enterprises. In the future, DLT may be applied in many other fields including health care, education or finance.
