The Spanish Association of Authors and Publishers known as (SGAE) alongside with the Madrid School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSIT-UPM) are investigating possible uses of blockchain technology. The main intention behind this is to improve copyright management in the new technological landscape.
Blockchain Technology for Copyright Management
According to a press release presented by the SGAE, the two institutions will be carrying out activities to collaborate in different technological areas using blockchain technology. Different practices related to investigation in new technologies will be taken into account for this collaboration. They will be creating a digital platform to manage copyright in a digital way.
This is very important because both agencies are two of the first public institutions in Europe and in Spain working with blockchain technology. Besides using blockchain technology, they will be investing in BigData, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and those that help protect musical pieces and other visual content on the internet.
The SGAE, José Miguel Fernández Sastrón explained on the matter:
“The main lines of research will focus on disruptive technologies that address the challenges posed by the volume, diversity and dynamics of change in the use of content in the contemporary digital environment.”
Using these new technologies, it is possible to face the challenges presented by data processing methods.
“Signing this partnership is related to the technological and innovation strategy that the SGAE is undertaking. Its main objective is to challenge the issues of data processing and new technologies,” explained Fernández.
It is important to mention that the agreement will be for a whole year and has been signed up through Rogelio Segovia’s Foundation. This kind of work would allow students be prepared to face the technological challenges in different areas.
Spain has been working with blockchain technology in many different areas. Indeed, the government decided to present proposals to foster the use of blockchain technology and benefit enterprises that work in the sector. At the European level, there are still no clear rules on the matter on how to regulate cryptocurrencies, but blockchain technology is receiving a special treatment in the whole continent.
