Björk, the famous Icelandic singer will accept cryptocurrencies for her new album Utopia. This is one of the first singers accepting different cryptocurrencies for their material. Blockpool, a British blockchain start-up, is in charge of the technical requirements.
Björk Accepts Cryptocurrencies
The information appeared first in the news site MusicAlly, where they have prepared an interview with Kevin Bacon from Blockpool. In this article, he explains that the intention is to see how the audience will react about paying with cryptocurrencies.
“Björk’s core audience may not be teenagers, but it will be really interesting to see how this pans out with artists who do represent that younger demographic,” he said.
Though, Bacon has previously been sceptical about blockchain related to the music industry. There is a problem, and it is that no blockchain can scale to the size of the music industry. At the moment, the album can be bought with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dashcoin and Audiocoin.
“Björk will also be the first artist to use cryptocurrency in a meaningful way, making her album available to pre-order and buy with bitcoin (BTC), Audiocoin (ADC), Litecoin (LTC) and Dashcoin (DASH) – all now valid currency in her online store,” reads the press release of the album.
Free Audiocoins For Those Who Buy With Cryptocurrencies
Once you pre-order the album you will receive 100 free Audiocoin. This is almost an unknown cryptocurrency that was created by Bacon some years ago. The price per Audiocoin is under 1 cent. At the moment 1 Audiocoin is equal to $0.004989 US dollars. The intention of Audiocoin is to “empower and engage music lovers all over the world”.
Before Björk’s album release, each Audiocoin was equal to $0.0019 US dollars. Later it spiked to $0.075
Buying the Album With Cryptocurrencies
The webpage One Little Indian Records is commercializing the pre-sales of the album. But what does not make sense is that there is no possibility to pay with cryptocurrencies. The only available options to process the payment are PayPal or via Credit Card.
As Bacon claims, the conversation around cryptocurrencies tends to be about Bitcoin’s value and how to convert it to fiat currency or cash. The real change will happen when people will start to think about Bitcoin as a means of payment.
Some people started to think that Björk accepting cryptocurrencies could be just a marketing strategy. But Bacon answered to those thinking in this way.
“This really isn’t a marketing strategy with Björk. This is a decision to be a leader. In fact, it is just the obvious thing to do for her. If I was not involved in this project, I would expect Björk to be a leader in this area, and for her team to be doing creative things with crypto. So we are not going to give her a menu of creative ideas,” he answered.
The fact that Björk accepts cryptocurrencies is a new way of thinking the music industry. Connecting music projects with the blockchain world will bring different benefits for the music sphere and the cryptocurrency world.
